Audi automatic gearboxes?

Can anyone give me a history of Audi automatic gearboxes starting with the one(s) used in an '89 G-reg Audi 80 up to the current auto gearboxes used in the latest A4.
I know it's a strange request but I was having a discussion with someone who was convinced that Audi still use the same automatic gearbox today as they did back in the late '80's  !
Also, how do the lastest Audi auto gearboxes rate in terms of reliability?

I have a 2001 Audi A4 2.0i with cvt auto box, it is without doubt the best gearbox I have used in a car, no changing, no lurching as you used to get in old boxes, very smooth and totally reliable, I have covered 80k, but now more then likely put the kiss of death on it.
The gearbox is the tiptronic so it is totally auto or 6 speed manual and completely different to the previous Audi gearbox you describe.0
