To Let Sign

Options
I have handed in a month's notice. The landlord has put up a to let sign outside. I have clients who come round and I don't want them seeing the to let sign.

Can I just take it down?

Surely if you valued your customers you would tell them that your business is relocating?

It isn't your property so surely you wouldn't be allowed to remove something that the owner wants to be present?

Why do you not want them to know you are moving?
  • Private tutor. Soon my students will have six weeks off for Summer and won't be coming round to the house. And before then I don't want them wrongly thinking I am going to stop tutoring.
  • 1. Do you have permission to run a business from the property? This is rarely allowed and will can cause all sorts of problems.

    2. Theoretically you could take it down and you can refuse viewings, in practice doing so will destroy any chances of a positive reference from your landlord (which will hamper future chances of rentals).

A reasonable tenant should understand that their landlord is a business and needs the opportunity to find new tenants. If you're not happy with this happening while you're still using the property, pay for an extra month or arrange something with the landlord! Just taking the sign down is disrespectful, at the very least talk with him.

You could contact all your clients and inform them that you will be moving to a new address soon, this should alleviate any misconceptions.
  • 1. The landlord know. The students are quiet.

    2. I don't mind viewings. It's the sign. To be honest, I think there might be strong winds tonight.

People don't tend to stop working when they move house so why would they think that?

Why don't you just prepare a note to give to each student explaining you are moving but will continue to work, in all my dealings in life I have found that being honest and explaining things has worked much better than trying to pretend its not happening!
