Employers Best candidate

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/jobs/7151528/Half-of-employers-bin-job-applications-with-spelling-errors.html

My spelling and punctuation are pretty bad it even coursed problems in exams and with course work to the point that i hate writing anything . Getting a decent job to be honest has been a nightmare .

Should we be judging people on there grammer for any job most of which require very little if any spelling or grammer skills .

i started work in a stock control department and found a few of the staff didnt know what decimal points were or what minus signs meant . But we dont see the same discrimination against people who cant add up it just accepted .

  • With the invention of spellchecker absolutely people who cannot spell on an application form or CV correctly should be discarded.

My view as an employer is that if a candidate can't be bothered to check spelling on a CV or application letter, they're not the one for me.
  • Interesting, I recently attended a recruitment evening - part of process was a literacy and maths test to which we were ALL armed with calculators! lol! even the ex bankers amoungst us!

Anyway I still got a job offer !
Really I think it was more for my showing attempt to complete test, personality, could start immediately and of course I'm probably cheap and a sandwich short of a picnic, though I never use 'txt speak' when making this or any application... must have ticked all the boxes I reckon!

'Decent' jobs out there if you are prepared to travel further?

If this is an example of your writing then I can quite understand why employers might dismiss your applications in favour of others - why should they waste their time trying to figure out what you are trying to say when they probably have dozens or even hundreds of properly completed applications to choose from.

PS My edit of your post isn't exhaustive, just pointing out some of the mistakes.

"We" probably do "discriminate" against those who can't add up, just that it will be a bit later in the process than the initial, written, application.

I'm not sure it is discrimination as such more of a selection process. if I got rejected for a job as a brain surgeon, it is not descrimination it's because I'm not qualified to do the job. Likewise if I don't complete a form or covering letter as well as someone else, that is not being discriminated against either.

The job application is a place to show what you can accomplish when you are trying your hardest to produce an excellent piece of work. Colleagues who are not mathematically secure will ask me about the occasional calculation, and I think it is similarly reasonable for employers to expect candidates who know they are prone to making English mistakes to have asked someone to check their application.

Had the whole of their cash in his care.
