I moved to my house just before Christmas and the old owner called n power with meter readings. She left me a copy but I didn't check them. I had no bill for 2 months so called up and was told I was on a quarterly bill so I told them I didn't want a massive bill so would like to start a direct debit. The bill is on line and I never gave it a thought until last week when I had a card through so I left meter readings.
I went on line afterwards to check my bill and npower are saying I owe them £700, and want to put my bill up from £70 to £170 I think this s crazy as its a tiny house, and I'm at work all week so heating is not on!! The rates they are charging are crazy, I've called them up and they are worse than useless and say they won't look at reducing the bill!!
Help and advice please!!

Does the take-over reading and the current reading tally with the bill? Or is the bill estimated and the estimated reading is much higher than the one currently shown on your meter? Does the opening reading on the bill correspond with the one supplied to you by the previous occupier?0

Is this the first bill you've had from nPower? If so, £700 for 6 months (a cold 6 months too) isn't that bad. Presumably it is using your supplied reading, so should be accurate. Obviously you don't have the starting reading, but have you provided any interim readings?
Look at your usage in kWh rather than monetary value. That gives you a much more accurate idea of what your annual usage might be.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the In My Home MoneySaving, Energy and Techie Stuff boards. Hi Anitasheff,
The bill that you mention - is this billed to actual readings? Are the start readings estimated or actual?
If you'd like me to look into this for you, just pop me an email with the details (address is on my profile page)
Many thanks,
