Account details

How long must a bank keep details off a credit card account?
Is it 6 years from the date of opening or 6 years from the date of closing the account?

Many thanks :)

They are not obliged to keep any records if the account is closed. They are only obliged to keep them as long as necessary. The FSA recommends 6 years, but in practice, this can be more or less time depending on the state of the account.

The only way to find out exactly what they've still got is to send them an SAR, general enquiries won't always produce older records.

Thanks for the quick replies. My credit card account was closed 2009 . I sent a copy of a statement to HSBC also with account details which I printed off Noodle(opening and closing dates etc) with the complaints form.
Received a letter this morning off HSBC saying they only keep records for 6 years and have no details of my account and could I send statements. I rung call centre as soon as I recieved the letter to say I had sent a statment and have since found some more and after they looked at my details they could not understand why they could not find any details as account was only closed 4 years ago and also why they were asking for proof of account when I had sent a statement as they had the copy I had sent (I sent a photocopy just in case they lost it)

So thought Id ask on here to see if there could be a reason for them not having held any details.
    Thanks again :)

The banks are swamped with complaints so mistakes do happen, glad you got it sorted and good luck with your complaint.
