New laptop for uni

I was burgled in April... Bye bye my beloved laptop.
I know how to use a laptop if its ready to go. Picking one off a shelf, deciding what windows package and virus stuff is another story. My last one was a hp and it was brilliant, even at 3 years old it still moved like a whippet. Before that I had a dell supplied by previous supplier and it was fast (fast makes me happy, slow makes me sad).
The least spent the better, I want it to be fast. It may store the odd photo, not many though. Lots of research on Internet and use of window packages for assignments. Occasionally I log into works computer remotely to work from home. I do not let my children use it unless for homework and I'm sitting next to them.
Anyone have any advice? I do not trust sales man, so I don't want to walk into pc world like a sitting duck.
Thanks

what budget are you realistically looking at as that will make major differences to the specDrop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)0 -
What size do you need? The regular size is 15" but if you want to carry it around can i suggest 13" or 14" and less than 2kg, do you need a disc drive for CD/DVD's or just use pen drives, you can always use a portable disc drive which you can get for £20 or just borrow a friends to stick it on a disc...

Acer S3 on the front page for £350 if you use the £30 off code(S3-£30).

I'm expecting to pay about £450 from pc big brand shop, that includes the windows package but the less I can spend the better.
This is what I've been looking at http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/laptops-netbooks/laptops/laptops/hp-pavilion-g6-2244sa-15-6-laptop-ruby-red-17419992-pdt.html
Screen size isn't important for me or a disc drive (USB yes). What is important is the keyboard as I touch type, I'll be studying on the sofa with laptop on legs.
Thank you so much for help so far0 -
I suggest you look for intel i5 CPU.
I am not opposing PCW, but they have less choice when you compare to other specialist online.
And if you want good value, you can consider dell outlet like these

Although i do agree that DELL is a superb make.0 -
This one looks very good at the price.
But unsure as to what office software comes with it, which isn't a problem as there is loads of good free stuff out there.
