How can I trace whether any life assurance has been paid?

My father died two years ago, but the executors of the estate have failed to provide me with the estate accounts, despite repeated written requests.
I am sure he had a number of life insurance policies, but as the executors took all the documents from his home, I have no way of finding out what they were.
There is no mention of any policies on the IHT Probate form, which I have managed to get.
Does anyone know of a method of finding out if any such payments were made?
