We bought a house 8 years ago and kept the original
gas supplier for 5ys.
We then decided to switch to a new supplier..
So we paid up the old bill and changed.
A year ago we had a debt collector at door saying we owed
2k in gas as supply was still with old supplier.
advised him we switched and showed him bill with new supplier
also spoke to the manager of the energy supplier debt department who advised not to worry and he would deal with.
Tried to call this manager back, left messgaes ect but they
never came back to me so assumed it was all sorted.
Good job I kept names of who I left messages with.
Then yesterday same debt collector called saying we now owed
4k
The old supplier owed the meter..
and shows on national data base.
Originally they set up 2 accounts at my address
they tried to say that they changed the meter in 2008
but we know that's a lie as we have proof its the same meter as
we still have the paper work
also the best thing is that this 4k .. they have been forwarding to themselves all this time so it has never come to this address.
I have looked all over the web about back billing
and it shows that since 2007 energy companies are not allowed to back bill over 12mths if they not dealt with accordingly.

Bit difficult to fathom exactly what's gone on from your post
.
1) There is the possibility the your present supplier FAILED to take over the Gas supply from your old supplier - In which case you do owe money to the old supplier, but you also get back all the money you paid to the new supplier.
However if this is the case, you are entitled to fully detailed bills from the old supplier, not just demands for cash
2) You mention that at one time there were 2 gas accounts set up for your address, and also that the old supplier is claiming the meter was changed, when in fact it was not.
All this points to the possibility that the 'rogue' Gas account was never cancelled, and/or, you are being billed for a meter that is not yours.
Whatever the problem is, it's complicated and will take time to sort out
Your 1st move is to check that the Meter No. shown on your bills matches that on your actual meter, then when you do get a proper bill from the old supplier, check the Meter No. on that bill against your meter
If all the numbers match, you are probably dealing with Problem A - So contact your present supplier in writing enclosing copies of the old suppliers bills.
If the old suppliers bills show a different Meter No to yours, it's Problem B so WRITE to them0 -

So the old supplier never sent you a bill, just sent debt collectors 2 years later. Hmmm...:cool:0 -
Never had a bill
On their system the bill they said was being forwarded onto the
company who built the house
But yesterday I found out that actually they had been forwarding the bill back to themselves..
its completely barmy!0 -
Have you gone through the internal complaints procedure? I'd say you have grounds.0

Did you ever ask for a bill in those 5 years?
Who did you think was paying?
Why did you switch supplier? You can't get much cheaper than free.
How did you know your annual usage if you never received a bill? Switching supplier based on innacurate anticipated annual usage means you don't know if you have chosen a good deal or not.0 -

Looking at the original post the Op has been receiving bills from the new supplierA year ago we had a debt collector at door saying we owed

Yes I have been paying my new supplier.
And im up to date
The company who is saying I owe them
I had an account with them for 5 yrs and paid up and moved.
Why I moved is irrelevant really.
The company chasing 4k
Had 2 accounts running on one address.
One I had paid upto date.
Im defo not in the wrong.
They should have measures in place so this dont happen0 -
Heads up
Gas supplier came back said they were wrong...
They had 2 meter point references at address..
apologised for sending debt collector.
Offered me £200 compensation...
What a joke!0 -
