My son seems to owe money to several payday loan companies - he still lives at home. He works full time so I dont know what he actually gets these loans for or what the money is spent on.

Everyday I am receiving phonecalls for him on my landline and letters addressed to him threataning that debt collectors are going to come. I just dont know what to do. He shoults at me for opening his letters - the only reason i open them is because i know its another letter from a payday loan company.

What can i do, I would like to kick him out but he wont go.. even if he did he would probably keep using my address to apply for more loans!! Is there anything to stop him doing this? The loan companies should not be lending to someone with such a bad credit history.

ITs a sad state of affairs but i am going to try to get legal advice to get my son evicted he refuses to help around the house, i am lucky if i get full rent every week at my age i really dont need this. he is more trouble in his 30s than when he was a teenager.

Opening a letter addressed to another is a criminal offence.

Kick him out, if he doesn't go, ring the police and have him removed from the property.

Maybe he's actually in quite serious financial trouble and you should sit down with him and help him through it.

I know he's obviously a right pain just now but imagine you threw him out, in his 30s in a terrible financial state. Maybe his finances are why he still lives at home, is angry and is living on credit?

Talk to him about it, ask him to be completely open with you about what he has and hasn't got. If you need to ask hi. To speak to someone from a debt charity or the citizens advice bureau and get some good advice on where to start.

    Best of luck

I hate to say it but I hope he's not on drugs.

    No, it's not.

Edited to say the post stuff. It's a complete myth.

Kick him out. It's the quickest answer and you have no comebacks despite what you claim.

Do it now and report back to us in a month.

    I guarantee it'll be fine.

Sure it is, invading one's privacy of their finances is a detriment to that person. The OP has no reasonable excuse to intercept the mail. Ergo, do not pass go.

My 'reasonable excuse' to intercept the mail, is that these are threatening letters saying that bailliffs/debt collectors are going to come to my address (and will more likely come when hes at work).

If its a privacy issue, he should not be giving my home phone number to these companies - im the one who picks up the phone and has to speak to these people.

Alternatively do you really expect me to just ignore whats inside these letters and give them to him to let him hide them and bury his head in the sand? He has given this address and my landline number to these people.
  • Thank you for your help and taking to time to reply. It does make me wonder though, can any estranged son/daughter use their parents address for payday loans! What is there to stop them!

The PDL companies are supposed to carry out checks.

Only illegal if intending to act to a persons detriment and without reasonable excuse.
