First private holiday rental, what to do with money etc?

I have just booked a private apartment for the algarve in a couple of weeks, its just occured to me (only having booked hotels before) that this apartment is very unlikely to have a safe. What do people do with money/passports?

Most the apartments I've booked have had safes

Otherwise, I'd just make sure my passport is out of sight and nowhere obvious.

In the past, we've put our money/passports etc in a small bag then placed it in a suitcase, which we've then locked and taken the key out with us. You could always buy a lockable cash box and lock that in a suitcase, although if someone was determined, they could just take the cash box.

Could you contact the owner to ask if there is a safe? If not, you have a bit of time to consider an alternative.

In the event of there being no safe we lock anything valuable in the empty cases.

Most of the villas/apartments we have rented have had those electric roller shutters and are probably safer than home and certainly safer than hotel rooms that only need a pass key.
