Council Mutual Exchange , Bedroom Tax & what is allowed??

Tbh I feel your being a little bit too picky.
I live with my partner and 17 month old son permanently in a one bed flat. So I don't quite understand how you need a 2 bed for your grandson who stays over occasionally.
Same for my neighbours - they live two floors above me, in a 1 bed flat, with their 4 year old son.0 -
I was going to downsize even before the bedroom tax was sniffed at by a politician , but never was and still am not willing to give up on my Grandsons cozy bedroom , everything has just gone haywire since the bedroom tax & benefit cuts along with it with everyone mud slinging and blaming each other & the subject of a 'spare bedroom' has become a very tetchy one now when I would have had a perfectly acceptable mutual exchange if I had found one pre April!! ... Or rather pre before the government even though up the idea
I have been looking for the right place for over 2 years , not desperately looking , but looking to move & downsize and now I am seriously looking
A lot of people don't understand why I want to move when they see the pics etc of the place & it is the only council property on the very pretty street , the rest are all private with professional owners , next door the couple are both doctors , I have 2 bathrooms & lots of space & character but am hoping that not only will my family be happy but one very happy family when they move in to this place too! :T
One minute people are having a go at me for wanting to downsize yet wanting the extra small bedroom , the next they are suggesting I stay put and keep all this space to myself! LOL0 -

That just shows how much nicer a person you are than the rest of us.:)0 -
The era of overlarge social housing is gone. No social housing provider wants to risk renting out a property if that person ever has to claim benefits as they won't be able to make up the shortfall. Those currently in overlarge property can only downsize to a property that has the number of bedroom that their circumstances state they need - not the luxury of spare room for friends or relatives popping by.
My Council used to allow a two bedroom property to a single adult if they had their children stay at weekend - no more - they will only rent a one bedroom property and the children have to kip on the sofa in the living room if they stay overnight. These are my own views and you should seek advice from your local Benefits Department or CAB.0 -
I know it is hard but I think we have to accept the changes. I understand why it is being done. I am affected as my son is in foster care. I am on the transfer list and can now bid on 1 bed properties. My son is nearly 17 and I have explained things as he stays with me sometimes. He is quite happy to sleep on the sofa. He plans on going to Uni and I have always said he has a home here.
The thing I find hard is the pensioners that are exempt and there are quite a few in larger houses.
Everyone will never be happy, no matter what happens!0 -

In case you didn't know, a student who's been in care can claim an extra bursary and also money to pay for accommodation during the long summer holidays.0 -

Thank you. My son receives a bursary from the school now while in care. We have a meeting in September with Social Services etc . Only today he was wondering what will happen when in Uni. My son has said this will discuss Uni. He wants to go to Uni and is supported by school. Will have to see what happens. He has done so well with everything that has happened and i am so proud of him!0 -
Hi, what are the rules for a couple (Older, no children) going into a 2 bed from one bed if they pay full rent. Is an exchange allowed under these circumstances0

it would depend on the individual councils policy.
but to be honest ... if someone loses benefit because they have no option than to under occupy ... it shouldnt be allowed for someone to CHOSE to under occupy just because they can afford to pay their rent0 -
The OP stated on another thread in March.............He even offered me £5,000 to do a home swap with him because he wanted my flat ........
Do many FLATS in the social sector have staircases ?0
