Hello, Im sak46's son.
I just got back from uni and im trying to speed up my mums Pc abit for her.
I remember when my computer was really slow that my friend cleaned up something on there, which made it turn on faster and generally run smoother, but i cant for the life of me remember what he did.

Can someone give me so tips on how to speed it up?

So far i have done a disk clean up, im now removing un used programs and iv taken a look at processes but that baffled me so i stopped (haha), in processes there are 51 processes running.

Thanks in advance

Alex

The easy way to speed it up is to upgrade RAM.
Don't listen to the bad things about Vista its the best

Just because it's free don't mean it's good

    Ditch Norton Now !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :wall:

Just Because you read it some where don't mean it's right ;)

    Go to Start then Run.

Type on msconfig and press enter. If will bring up a small screen. Click the tab on the far right called Start Up. You might find lots of programs are starting when your computer starts up which you don't need to be running from the start. De-select these and it will help.

Just make sure all you anti-virus and spyware protection are selected.

Yes just do what I said again and it will be there to select. When ever you install new software they sometimes and most often all the time start up at the start without you knowing so over time it will start to build back up so just keep an eye on it.

http://ccleaner.com/ is also good for getting rid of the temp internet files etc if you haven't already got it.

The only way I could speed up my computer (short of buying RAM) was to disable about 30 services- the ones that are useless and/or a security risk like remote access and the like. there are loads of guides on the net for how to do it. Also, dont have any progs automatically loaded up on start up.
I also, like a lot of people are doing, got rid of virus protection. Norton McaFee, AVG, Avast, Kasperksy etc all claim to be 'light' but they are absolutely not. The virus software is a performance killer on older machines with low RAM.
Havent had a virus since I got rid 2 years ago, it seems to me you have to be extremely careless to get one.
My rubbish PC boots up quicker, and is generally faster than it did when i bought it

If you don't have virus protection then how can you be sure you haven't got a virus?
