"Prize is for two people aged 18 or over to travel on Explore's Old Siam & The River Kwai tour to Thailand (trip code OS) on or before 31 March 2014. The trip is 12 days (11 nights). "Starting in Bangkok, you'll explore the city's network of meandering klongs (canals) in a traditional longtail boat, visiting the Royal Barge Museum, the iconic Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn), the glittering Grand Palace and wonderful Wat Pho, with its immense Reclining Buddha.
Escaping the noise and heat of the capital, you'll head north by overnight train to Chiang Mai. This bustling, bohemian town is the gateway to northern Thailand's hill treks and elephant sanctuaries. While you're there, take a tasty cooking lesson and pick up some handicrafts in the city's bustling markets.
Heading south again, discover ancient Siamese history. See the sacred Wat Chang Lom, with its 39 elephant statues, in the heart of old Si Satchanalai before cycling around Sukhothai, the first capital of Siam. Next, embark on a leisurely cruise down the winding Chao Phraya River aboard a converted rice barge to experience the life of the indigenous river dwellers and boat people, and to access another of Siam's ancient capitals, UNESCO World Heritage-listed Ayutthaya.
Discover more recent history at Kanchanaburi with a visit to the infamous 'Bridge over the River Kwai' and 'Death Railway' - scenes of one of the most notorious episodes of the Second World War. After a visit to 'Hellfire Pass', the war cemetery and the Memorial Museum, journey up the River Kwai to stay in tranquil rafthouses on the river's edge - the perfect place to contemplate the trip so far.
Your final days in Thailand will be spent exploring the dense jungle on elephant-back and in bamboo rafts, with visits to nearby Mon minority villages before returning to Bangkok."
