Barclaycard Upgrade/Downgrade

Good Morning

I hold a standard barclaycard (originally a student card) which was recently changed to a Gold card, I was informed this was now the standard card they offered as their products had changed.

I have logged onto my online account this morning and it now shows as a Platinum card. I have never been notified about the change and was wondering if this had happened to anyone else and what implications/benefits there would be?

I have sent a secure message to Barclaycard but from past experience their customer service isn't the best.

Thanks for any help in advance

  • Hi!
Exactly this happened to me (student card -> gold card) and I got a leaflet with my last statement (last week) saying that it would be changing to platinum in the next month. It said that they wouldn't be sending out new cards until it expired, and apart from the name of the product (i.e. on the online service and statements) nothing would change; the number, credit limit, interest rate, terms etc. everything would be the same.
Do you get statements by post? If not maybe that's why you didn't hear anything. Either way tbh it doesn't look like a lot will change, maybe in the future there will be more promotional deals or something - and one day I'll get my ego stroked by having a shiny bit of 'platinum' plastic in my wallet :)

Yeah I opted for paperless statements so that's possibly why I didn't receive any information.

Thanks for the information, it seems another pointless exercise by Barclays, they have only just changed it to a gold card :-/

Trouble with Barclaycard Platinum is that there are about a million of them with completely different deals, so it's difficult to tell from their website exactly which deal you've got. The best bet would be to call them or look at your statement.

You should've been informed by mail or email, benefits are none as far as I can see and implications are that if your on vacation during the switchover you have a chance of no workable card for a week or two :o

I've found Barclaycard's customer service to be above par.

id say your new platinum card comes with no balance offers or purchase offers, they have simply upgraded your card, and you have not applied for a platinum with benefits, your aprs will stay the same, the only difference is that you may now be allowed to withdraw more money from atm (not advised anyway) then on your previous card
  • On the leaflet they sent they said they were taking "Gold Cards" away - therefore everyone would be basic or platinum. My credit limit etc is unchanged - so I will be looking at changing myself to the cashback version of the card.

It appears completely unchanged. I do get certain offers from them: 6% for life BT, cash withdrawal available, but it is 29.9% apr for purchases which is a little high for me to justify using (other than for paying it off every month)
