Suggestions wanted for steam cleaner- please

As me & my wife are not so young & not in such great health we feel a steam cleaner may take away some of the heavier aspects of cleaning. Unless they are an overrated waste of money?

So any suggestions would be very welcome as I have no idea where to start looking & how much we would need to spend to get one that is effective & not just a gimmick.

There's a very thorough review in "Which" magazine, March 2013 covering all the different types, features, what to look for, and listing Best Buys and ones to avoid. I bought a "Best Buy" steam floor mop, which has done well. You can get a "Which" trial subscription for £1 if you're not a subscriber already. Hope this is useful.

I wouldn't bother. I have a Polti, all-singing, all-dancing steam cleaner and it rarely comes out of its box.

If you really must then Sainsburys have the Vax half price at the moment.

Why not if you don't mind me asking?

I found that it just moves the dirt around. It has no suck up power so you have to get down on your hands and knees to wipe up the moved around dirt. The TV advertising showed it cleaning grouting and it doesn't. It also showed it cleaning the oven of grease and it doesn't. Grease really needs a detergent of some kind to be properly removed. The TV advert showed it great for steam cleaning rugs, it isn't.

It's a big old thing and needs to be filled up with water and allowed to get hot and by the time I've done all that I can just boil a kettle and wash the kitchen floor with a bucket of Flash and a mop.

KNow anyone who wants to buy a second hand one?

I think it's worth having a look at the report, and thinking what you want it for, on the principle that something which is supposed to do everything may not do anything very well. The very expensive Polti was one of the Which "Don't Buys"! The other Polti models, and Vax, didn't do very well on testing. I just got an upright for hard floors, and its much easier than an ordinary mop, and cleans fine.

Thanks a lot folks & just signed up for the Which Magazine but let my wife do the reading up. I am posting separately about cleaning shower cubicle glass door/walls if anyone can help with that as that is the main reason my wife feels she would like the steam cleaner.
