Transfer vinyl to cd

Have a load of vinyl eg 'Greasy Truckers Party'! which I wish to transfer to cd. Have seen the ad's for usb turntables - are these any good? Do you get a software package with them? What's the best? Any alternatives? Thanks

An alternative if you already have turntables is to download this free program...

    http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

Then connect your Turntable to your line in or soundcard on your pc.

Select record line in on the audacity program

Play the vinyl and press record on the audacity program and it will record what you hear. You can then stop the program and crop the ends easily and add any effects/adjustments if needed.

I use a walkman to transfer my audio cassettes to my PC, I just connect using a cable that has a 3.5mm jack on each end and plug one into the earphone socket and the other into my sound cards input socket.

If you have a record player with a earphone socket it should do the same thing. I capture and edit the sound with 'Audacity' a free audio editing utility.

Beat me to it bigtel :)

Just remember that if your using an existing turntable you can't plug it directly into the line in because it needs a phono preamp stage. Therefore it has to go via a hifi amp. Unless you have a turntable that has an incorporated phono pre amp (most don't).

Thanks for the relies, I've got an STD deck and NAD amplifier somewhere! Are the usb decks anything special? Is the Audacity prog easy to use?

I use one of these connected to my amplifier (slightly different model). If the amp has a digital connection better but works fine using tape deck connection. I know it's so last century and you have to buy audio cd-r/rw but it works fine for me.
I didn't say this but will copy those cds with anti copy and extra stuff on them!

If you have an old hi-fi just get an adapter that plugs into your headphone socket then into your line in...
  • I was in Maplin electronics yesterday, and they have in store a USB record deck for £99.

Mr Gardener, I wish I could help but I have not heard any reports on the USB turntables either. they look cheap and crappy, I'm not sure on the quality of the cartridge either, you would be better to check out audacity and connect your existing equipment up to your PC and do it the "old fashioned" way, the quality of your equipment will produce a better recording if the USB isnt any good.

Also £100 is a bit to spend on shmthing that you can already do with a cable and what you already have, there is no highspeed ripping available witht he old black disky things ;)
