Television picture fault?

Options
Hi, my television has developed a fault, the screen is red with a series of thin horizontal lines, there is sound and I can change the station. Every now & again the picture returns, all though some what breifly.

Any help with this would be gratefully accepted.
I used to be indecisive, but now I'm not sure!

Not a very techie answer, but when I've had that kind of thing in the past the TV's had it and I've got a new one, it's often not worth replacing bits (plus labour) as TV's are so cheap now... those 2nd hand electrical goods shops are good for getting one if you're not bothered about a particular type, but there again it's not much more for a new one nowadays.

Problem is that repair shops will quote £50 just to find the problem, plus parts if they can fix it. Economically, it doesn't make sense to repair, though it does pain me to throw away all that technology for what is probably a loose connection or broken transistor.

Dont throw good money after a repair. Thats my twocents

TVs are not made to last - todays throwaway society. We got a 28" IDTV widescreen with a stand and DVD player for £410, fantastic! BUT how much did it cost to the store - probably £250, and therefore around £125 to manufacture - no wonder they dont last! But what a great price. I figure in 5 years I will probably need a HDTV anyway so I dont need a bulletproof build piece of engineering

This is why you put the money for an extended warranty away in a high interest account - then if you get 5-10 years out of the set you can use the savings to buy a new one

I'm not in the TV repair business but you would be suprised at the regular, almost predictable faults that TVs exhibit according to manufacturer and model number. These faults become well documented and the solution well publicised.
Never go near the insides of a TV. Potentially lethal voltages remain even when disconnected from the mains.

  • Intersesting site Criminal_Smile, however since my original posting, a colleague at work has sorted out a contact of his that actually runs a TV shop to have a look at the telly for free, to establish if it is repairable.

    Fingers crossed!!!!
