Home Insurance from someone renting

Hi there!
I would like to ask about home insurance. I created this thread because i have some items inside our flat that i fear that when i go on a holiday or travelling to work (such as a laptop/tablet or a phone) these items might get lost or stolen and i may never get it back.
I have rung my bank and they gave me a quote of £329/year (plus legal) in which i told them the total amount i need to insure is around £3500 and also as an example i told them i can only manage to pay £50 off a £600 high-end smartphone.
Is this quote sounds just about right? IS it too expensive? What else i need to ask or include before taking out a home insurance?
Please advice.
Thanks so much.

You mean contents insurance?
It depends where your home is, if a high crime area that could be OK for £3500 high value items, if not a high crime area then it might be a bit on the high side.
You should try a comparison website to get a lots of quotes, see the insurance section on this site for details.0 -
Yes i mean contents insurance.
The area is SW19 London and i don't think its a high-crime area. I am still awaiting for a reply from the estate agent/landlord on the home insurance.
What price comparison sites are good to inquire? Will it accurately tell me how much i need to pay?0 -

a reply about what?0 -
A reply about home contents insurance.
I had a reply and they advised me to get my own home insurance with accidental damage option in case something breaks down.
I've heard of such comparison sites but which site is best?0 -
I wouldn't use a comparison site as you can get 2 different excess voluntary excess and compulsory excess. Always good to go direct.
Company that is good is Moneysave managed to save around £90 a year and I got 2 months free cover0 -
Do you guys think that even though i'm renting and on a low-crime area its still worth getting a home insurance?0
-
You're in the middle of London ........ Not the middle of nowhere
Not exactly a low crime area.
And even if you were in a low crime area, what if your house burned down. Contents insurance doesn't just protect against crime, there are other ways to lose all your belongings too.Early retired - 18th December 2014

It was a stipulation of our rental agreement that we HAD to have contents insurance. I would consider it a necessity anyway. Do use a comparison site. This year I only paid about £49 (with the cashback taken off) for contents cover including a few specific items up to about £2000.
Check Quidco or similar cashback site as I got £19 off the price and it paid very quickly.Mortgage remaining: £42,260 of £77,000 (2.59% til 03/18 - 2.09% til 03/23)
Savings target June 18 - £22,281.99 / £25,0000 -

£49 a month is not very cheap for contents only policy unless you have made claims in the past 5 years, that's about average for B&C0 -
IanRi - is that £49 for the year inc cashback? I certainly hope so as £49 p/m sounds horrific for contents only insurance.
As to the original post - are you sure that £3.5k will cover everything that you own - carpets, furniture belongings, etc.
If you take out a contents insurance policy you need to make sure you are insuring everything adequately - you can't just insure certain items or you will only get a % pay out of any claim or could void the policy.
Most mainstream insurers offer tenants insurance and you should get some quotes online via comparison sites or directly through the insurer.
It is always sensible to check the excess fee and make sure that the policy will cover your items for loss or damage away from home as well if you require this.
Bear in mind that your home contents insurance will not normally cover you if an item breaks down.
I would be dubious that the estate agent / landlord will get you the best deal but I could be wrong.
If you only want cover for laptops, ipads, phones, etc you might want to consider a gadget insurer eg

I don't know how good this is and I'm sure if you search you can find other suppliers.0
