am thinking about a 3 night city break in august with my 12 year old, loves museums /art and likes the idea of exploring by bike!
We would want to stay within easy walking distance of main centre, but not too near for a noisy nightlife to prevent sleeping?
Obviously safety for mum and child paramount ,but we'd probably be back at hotel 8-9pm.
Any recommendations please?

We've been twice and stayed at the Swissotel, just off Dam Square. Would recommend.0

I've given the Hotel Brouwer my hard earned once or twice - great place

I stayed at the NH Grand Krasnapolsky on Dam Square and I don't think you could get a better location - I went with a friend who travels to Amsterdam fairly frequently and she always stays there. You do pay for the location though!Common sense?...There's nothing common about sense!0

I had a great few days at the Inntel Amsterdam Centre. Very quiet (we were on the 5th floor) and only 5 minutes walk from Dam Square and Centraal Station. I'd recommend it!0

I'd really recommend staying by Leidseplein square. It's by the museum district with excellent transport and is a lovely square full of restaurants with outdoor seating and street performers. I felt that it was a very social place where you could relax with a drink and listen to music, but less 'edgy' than near the station with groups of drinking men and the red light disrict. It was by a canal and on the 'hop on hop off' canal tours as well as being on three of the tram lines.

Holiday Inn at the very end stop of Tram 4 (I think) - about 20 mins to centre and back.0

The Rijksmuseum has just re-opened after a long refurbishment and looks like a must see. https://www.rijksmuseum.nl/en
I would have thought Leidseplein area a good location as previously suggested.
This site will give you a good idea of hotels and prices
