    It might be worth you checking your local Homebase. The other day ours had quite a few reduced from £80 to £50 because the packaging was damaged. I was tempted but Dad talked me out of it as he doesn't think I need one...

    Make sure to get as large a motor as possible >2KW

    Worth checking out ebay 'cos lots of people buy them and then don't use them! NB We use a Parkside at home which does a great job - from Lidl!

    I'd be wary of buying one at all to be honest.

    I've hired them in the past, and managed to 'kill' one within a few minutes.

    To be fair, the hire shop replaced it with a petrol 'parks dept' big 'un. But even this struggled, dependent on what I was trying to put through it.

    I had just moved into the house and had cleared loads of overgrown bushes, but found the machine just 'chewed' them, causing the blades to jam, rather then cutting through.

    I'd say you're OK if you want to deal with woody stuff, but anything green will cause problems.

    If I had these problems with the kind of resilient kit that hire shops stock, I can't say I'd have much faith in a budget one from a garden centre.

    Me too. I've mangled two shredders. They just blew up. If they aren't industrial sized ones then they can't manage the volume and the thickness of twigs. It was very laborious, too - you have to feed the individual length into the mouth (making sure they are the right size).

    I reckon that if someone started a 'mobile shredder' business where they crunched all your tree bits for you and returned them to you as a pile of chipped bark - they'd get me as a customer.

    I went through looking at shreeders in detail a few months back and after trying a few found out most were pretty useless not to mention noisy.

    I ended up buying a reasonably expensive one but its very quiet and works brilliantly. Its a Bosch AXT 2200 HP. A short interesting article on shredders here;
