Having an expensive smart phone, when I took out the contract I took out Insurance2Go, the recommended insurance by MSE.
In the event, I made a claim for a damaged phone. It took about one month, many phone calls, angry letters etc to get them to take it seriously and do something about it. They were asking for all sorts of proof of ownership and when I sent something it took them 5 days to respond and tell me that it wasn't the correct letter. The company you will be dealing with in the event of a claim are CityMain.
As a result of the farce, CityMain were ordered to pay a £25 compensatory payment by Lloyd's of London who are underwriters with whom my complaints had escalated. The hassle was not worth it.
This year, I have bought a new smartphone (HTC M8) and have upgraded my Nationwide current account to the FlexPlus to cover phone loss/accidental damage. I recommend (at this stage!) paying the little bit more with either Nationwide or your phone provider.0
