Trying to cancel credit cards

I've just become credit card debt free for the first time in 10 years! However, I tried to cancel my barclaycard account today and the lady at customer retentions said 'we won't cancel it, but we will stop sending you new cards just in case you change your mind.'
Should I have told barclaycard to close it anyway?
Also they were very pushy on the phone to keep the account open, should I complain to barclaycard about this?
Thanks

Have a look at a thread a little bit down from the top about barclays retentions, some people have got a free £50 credit for keeping it open. Phone them again and see what they say. Spend the £50 and cancel it then.0
