Crittall windows

I've spotted a house I like, will need to take a builder round it to estimate the cost of refurbishment. The windows are original crittall windows. I assume they will need replacing and if they do would want to replace them with something in keeping with the house. I know it is possible to get replacement crittall windows - are these way more expensive that bog standard double glazing? How often do they need painting?

I'm not fussed about double glazing - quite happy to put thick curtains up - but I want to know a bit about what I'm doing before I approach a replacement window company and get sucked in by a salesman.

If you don`t mind living with single glazing and it`s running condensation then fine ;)Why assume the crittals will need replacing ? If they are in hardwood or decent softwood frames they will be fine . I would keep them if they were in a 30`s Deco house - but that`s my dream home . I `ve just looked on t`web and there are loads of co.s who will replace with " modern " crittals - I guess it`s the old adage of 3 quotes and Caveat Emptor - good luck , it`s nice to read of someone who doesn`t want the wierd guy with his BOGOF offer and his loud voice ;) How often do originals need painting - around 5 years or so but if the surrounds are softwood , as often as the paint degrades . Then just do the wood - the metal parts are virtually indestructable .

I agree, I have original Crittalls and can't imagine why anyone would 'assume' they need replacing.

We had Crittal windows and replaced them, but only because we wanted double glazing, and didn't want to be painting every year - our house is no architectural dream, and it wasn't an issue. We got the best deal we could - but getting a good double glazing deal is a WHOLE other thread....
