Yeah, it was the most notorious example of vapourware for around 12 years before it was finally released after multiple rebuilds and redesigns and a number of associated developers went broke.

And... it was awful.

You start the game urinating, and that's pretty much the highlight.

There's some awful attempts at humour such as the infamous "wall boobs", the gameplay is unimaginative, the levels at times are so repetitive that it is almost like you've stepped into the imagination void of a developer who hasn't been paid in six months and for a shooter that is supposed to be a bit retro the Halo-style mechanic of only being able to carry two weapons at once is just silly.

On top of that, there's a bunch of groan inducing pop culture references such as a pop at Christian Bale's meltdown and a set of twins who perform sexual acts on Duke and are clearly modelled after a rather famous pair of celebrity twins.

Really, it seems like Duke Nukem 3D's notoriety for being a little bit edgy at times with the "Shake it baby!" and Army of Darkness style quips was what they based the game on... just one attempt after another at juvenile humour and attempts to shock and offend, whilst forgetting they were supposed to be making a video game so that the actual game part seems ill-thought out and tacked on.

They weren't even successful at being shocking or edgy... it was all just one "Really?" moment after another.

Probably not the worst game ever but when Gamespot is giving you a 3/10 rating you know it's pretty bad. Sadly, it's like those movies that always show up on worst ever lists like Ed Wood movies, or Troll 2 - one day you buckle and check it out for yourself to see just how bad it is. When it showed up on steam for £0.74 (yes, they sold it one day for 74 pence!) I buckled... and frankly, I felt ripped off.
