Hi, I have recently moved to a different town.
My former letting agency said they were going to take care of the gas&electricity company, they only asked my new address and said they would take the meter readings when I left.

I've been having a peek at the online account to see when the last bill comes out so I can pay it online. I see that they say the estimate readings are from the day I left the house so I assume the agency let them know I left.

HOWEVER, there's still no bill (it's been 10 days) and if I look at the ESTIMATE READING I see something outrageous!!

These are my readings (real ones, taken by myself) from last February

02/03/2013 Customer read, Gas (24 hours) 2990
02/03/2013 Customer read, Electricity (24 hours) 7100

and these are the estimates!!

20/06/2013 Estimated read, Gas (24 hours) 3374
20/06/2013 Estimated read, Electricity (24 hours) 60554

the gas estimate sounds about right but the electricity is probably 10 times higher !!!!

This is obviously a mistake but.. am I going to receive a final bill worth 10's of thousands of pounds???

I'm really stressed now..

I'm afraid leaving it to the Letting Agency to report your Final Utilitly readings to the Suppplier was a very bad move - They are your bills - The only person who will worry about getting them right, is you.

If you have left it to the LA to report your opening readings for the new home, note down what the readings are NOW

The Elec meter read of 60554 is a obviously an error, but don't for a moment think that n'power will recognise that and bill on a different figure - It's up to you to challange and correct it.
If it stands you are looking at a bill in excess of £6,000, so get yourself back to the agents and create Merry Hell to get access to the flat so you can photograph the meter
  • can i just add that i only just received a bill from n power last week even though i moved September so its taken them 9 months to send me my final bill. I gave them my forwarding address and my supply is still with them at my new house

They are permitted to take up to 12 months to issue the bill.

Think of it as an interest free loan :)

    Hi jmmo20,

Did you take a note of the meter readings when you moved out? I'm assuming that the account was in your name, so the bill and meter readings should be your responsibility. Without the final readings, all we can do is estimate based on previous consumption.

Obviously, the electricity reading looks incorrect. If you'd like me to follow this up and see what we can do, pop me over an email to the address on my profile page, and I'll take a look.

    Many thanks,

    Adam :)
