Refused mortgage because of default

I have just been refused a mortgage because of a default on my credit file I didn't even know anything about. I have spoken to experien and they say it is due to a debt in my name linked to my dads address which i have never lived at used only as a postal address for a month back in 2006. The debt is for £546 and was something that was taken out or started in 1990 and defaulted by Mackenzie hall on 1.1.12 I know nothing about this have had no dealings with any debt collectors and its 23 years old. I need to get this cleared up and off my credit report as the mortgage company will go ahead if it is taken off my file. How would I go about this? Should I ring Mackenzie hall? send them a prove it letter? Mackenzie Hall have really messed my credit report up!

Is it your debt? Do you know what the debt relates to?
Has Dad not passed on any letters from MH to you in the last year?
First off would be to write to MH say that you have noticed a default on your credit file and request details of the alleged debt.A smile enriches those who receive without making poorer those who giveor "It costs nowt to be nice"0 -
It's not my debt, don't know what it relates to, haven't had any phone calls from dc's or letters from my dad. I will take it up with MH and write to them about the alleged debt and thanks melj16 was thinking the same myself!0

If no payment was made since before 2006, this may be SB......

If you don't think you have any debts that are unpaid then its quite likely this is a case of mistaken identity. That the debt could belong to someone with the same or similar name to you which has been incorrectly traced and linked to your credit file by MH.
If that is the case then the DOB for the debt will not be yours. If this is the case and its not yours then you should be able to get it removed from your file but realistically it could take a few weeks and a bit of hassle to get this sorted.A smile enriches those who receive without making poorer those who giveor "It costs nowt to be nice"0
