De-energised but have power?

Hello, I have recently taken on the lease of a shop, when the electician tried the electrics they were live and for the next few weeks as building work still continues I thought no more about it.
Last week a man from What utilities called the shop and told me i was on an emergency tarriff with N-Power who were my supplier, he then quoted me lots of prices and wanted to sign me up. I decided I would shop around myself, so phoning N-Power gave then the meter No. and my address to be told my meter was still de-energised and it was not their electric I was using. I phoned my local utilities and I do have an MPAN No. My meter No. is not on file and the screen is broken so I can not get a meter reading, but no-one can seem to tell me who is supplying me?
I am now receiving calls from someone at new bussiness utility registration.
My question is, is it my responsibility to register with someone? Surely if they cannot find my supplier on record, where is my incentive?

Only in avoiding the possibility of a large bill if and when someone does eventually catch up with you.

It sounds possible to me that someone may have by passed the meter, if so you don't want them accusing you do you?

Perhaps put your query in writing to Npower, if they still say they are registered as supplier but you are de energised, it's not their electric etc rather than come out and find out what is happening then you may have more room for argument in case of any later dispute

If its de-energised get them to check ecoes, as its likely just not showing as a live account after they have migrated. It will catchup with you, and been a business they can go back 6 years
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.
  • Thanks for that chanz4, the chap at n-power i spoke to told me if i wanted to open a new account with them I whould have to phone a different department from him they would then have to register me and set up the new account, but that i would only start being charged from when that account went live, and as I was not a registered customer with them he could not keep any record or notes of our conversation. I asked what would happen if the call never got made, (just testing of course) and he said it was unlikely they would find out. Now I know that I may be found out, but, if I put money aside to pay the bills as if I was registered, surely its got to be worth a try to stay off the books

What happens if someone rocks up with a Warrant and knocks the power off?

The DNO should know exactly who is supplying you, the supply has never been disconnected as the meter would have been taken with it - the DNO should have a record of the meter number.

It is possible that the service fuses have been removed and the meter by passed, the DNO should be able to check this for you, at the moment you are technically stealing electricity if this is the case - they will probably let it go if you have acted reasonably in getting them to check, however if they think you have hidden it after finding out expect to be taken to court.

    Hi oldbutch,

Are you able to email me (address is on my profile page) the MPAN, meter serial number, address and any other details you can, and I can speak to our business team about this?

    Many thanks,

    Adam :)

Their are two ways of isolating, and fuse removal is one only used when debt or vacant is involved, nomaly tampered meters are removed.
