    Thanks again for the responses.

    Canoeing and rafting sounds brilliant.
  • I've travelled abroad on my own and would suggest that for your first trip you keep it fairly short. Enough time to see the main attractions but not so long that if you are uncomfortable eating on your own in the evenings or don't have anyone to talk to you find yourself wishing that you were at home.

Definitely agree with getting a guide book if you are going to a city and also try the tourist office when you get there. It will probably be a little stressful trying to find your way around somewhere new especially when you haven't got anyone to compare notes with or help you make your decisions.

But go ahead and try it out. you'll soon find out what you enjoy.

I've been to Marrakech and Italy and am trying to think of where to go next - possibly Barcelona
I need to make a new list for 2014
think of something to put on it!:rotfl:
Try harder for 2014 as I never managed it in 2012 or 2013

Rome is not full of romantic couples, it is full of tourists!! so if you have a yen, just do it.
Rome is one of the most fabulous cities in the world, you can shop, eat wonderfully, sit in a cafe and watch the world, wonderful sightseeing and small enough to walk around. There are plenty of single tourists about so you will not feel out of place.
Do be careful of the scams, especially someone trying to be very helpful at any sort of automated machine (station/bank etc) anyone bumping into you and then profusely apologising, anyone offering to carry your case etc - they are after your purse generally - I have had this happen three times in the last 2 visits. Only take with you the money you need and always be aware of those in close proximity to you. Still it is my favourite place in the world and you will have a wonderful time.

Difficult one, the Eternal City is my favourite place on Earth (> 10 visits do far and still loads on the list to see), but both Prague & Budapest have their own charms. Oh & Krakow as well.

If money is a limiter take one of the Eastern Europeans, if not or you think you could lose yourself in the sites/history then Rome without a doubt.

I'm travelling to Rome in a couple of months (admittedly, on honeymoon!) and we've booked a place through Airbnb. Seems like a great way to meet people but also stay somewhere nice for less than the cost of a hotel room.

You are going to Rome on Honeymoon and you are renting a spare room off someone?!

I started travelling on my own and have never looked back. I went down the cheapo route staying at the International Youth Hostels. I have met loads of people along the way and keep in contact. I have just come back from Vienna where I met up with Australian friends I met in Florence a good few years back. We booked an apartment through Airbnp and had a super stay at a very reasonable price. I am considering B & B with Airbnp for my next trip. Rome, I have stayed in a Convent but nowadays they are pretty pricey, the YHA and the YWCA - all good safe accommodation. I favour the YWCA over the YHA as it is very central. Just go for it - you need to take the plunge and if you don't like it, don't go again..... try not to look like a tourist, with camera hanging round neck and don't stand in the middle of the pavement looking at a map. ENJOY

I've been travelling on my own for years and think it's a great idea. Despite contrary belief it's quite easy to meet people and as long as you prepare a bit, you'll find it very reqarding. Day tours etc are a good way if you want to hang out with someone. Otherwise, just sit back, relax, grab a beer and enjoy.

Well, I decided on Rome and managed to get return flights and 3 nights stay for around £230.

Now going to spend time researching the main sites I would like to visit but am looking forward to exploring and seeing what happens.

Thanks to everyone for their input and advice.
