Fitness First Help !!!

I have been with Fitness First since September 2011 on a 12 month contract and in late March 2013, I spoke to a member of staff asking them to cancel my membership as I will be travelling during May. As per the terms and conditions of Fitness First, I needed to hand in a months calendar notice. I was under the impression that if I let them know of my intention to cancel in March, I shall only pay for April, which was fine with me.

The member of staff told me that I should think about freezing my account or if I wanted to cancel that I have until the 20th April make a decision. I considered the freezing option as I knew that they tend to hike prices but after a second consultation with them in which they stated that the prices won't be going up when I come back from my travels, I decided to cancel on the 13th April.

On that day a member of staff wrote dates that said that I knew my membership was going to end on the 31st May. I stated that I will not be paying for May as I was very adamant and abundantly clear that I will not pay for something I shall not be using. She said that they have to put the dates on the form for head office and that I should go to my bank and cancel my Direct Debit. I took her advice and cancelled on the same day.

It was whilst travelling that they sent me letters and texts stating that I owed them money for May, I called them up and explained the situation but they were adamant that I should have given a months notice. They refused to listen and said that I should pay the £59.95 and at the most they will log it as a complaint.

I fail to comprehend what it is that I have done wrong when I have followed their terms and conditions and took advice from a member of staff who had given me an extension.
