Central heating boiler efficiency

My Trianco 15/19 oil fired boiler, installed in 1988, gives trouble free performance. At its last service the engineer noted a net combustion efficiency of 87.7%.

When I read about condensing boilers, with manufacturer's stated efficiencies of 90% or 95%, does that mean that I would only gain a few percentages of combustion efficiency by replacing the old boiler? Or is it not that simple?

I query this because a home energy check suggested a new condensing boiler would save on oil usage.

Good evening: If you visit https://www.sedbuk.com you'll find that your boiler's SAP seasonal efficiency is rated at 70% and in fact has been allocated a Band F rating (most condensing boilers are Band A). You would benefit from the installation of a condensing oil boiler. For more information on the specification of oil boilers visit http://www.energysavingtrust.org.uk/uploads/documents/housingbuildings/ce29.pdf

Although you may make some savings on fuel costs by changing to a condensing boiler by the time you take into account the boiler and installation costs and the loss of interest on the invested capital I think you will find that it will never pay back. Depends on whether you are looking at your best financial option or want to save the planet.
