tent recommendation for a single mum

Options
I am thinking of getting a tent so me and my five year old can go on cheap holidays.

I have been camping before (with the ex) and we borrowed a tent. The problem is the tent took two people to put up, it would be impossible with just one, you needed one person each end of the pole to bend it into shape.

I need a tent that I can put up on my own, its needs to be big enough to stand up in and move around in. Any suggestions?

Thanks

  • Hi, For ease and simplicity - the quechua is a good one. I have seen these on campsites used by single parents/people and you can put this up in seconds. There is good head-height, but not great amounts of space for living, but as it is designed on a modular system, so you can add bits to it to make the living space bigger.

yep the decathlon range is great idea but they can be a handful to get back down, you need he knack.
Do check the whole range as not all are modular.

Off the top of my head the vango icaraus, comes as a 400 (4 berth) 500 ( 5 berth) and 600 (6berth)
No personal experiance of these tents but have seen lots of people say they are suitable for one person erecting alone.
You can also get canopy or enclosed porch for more living/cooking shelter.

And a bonus is you can buy the Icarus from Argos!!!! so easy enough to purchase.

I have an Icarus, not sure I would/could put it up single handed. great tent though

would only need help for a few minutes though, so if on a site there would prob be someone willing to help

Very good tent, very easy to put up, double skin so you don't wake in a puddle of condensation, only one room though.

I doubt you'll find a tent that 1 person can put up that you'll be able to stand in etc. Just not practical, because as you said, they need long poles that require 2 people.

    OP,

at five you son can hold poles etc while you pin the other side.

There are plenty of tent but off the top of my head the Icarus was the only one I could remember.

Have a read on UKCS I searched for single handed and came up with these threads HERE not read any, but you might find some useful info.

Khyam quick erect. They are like umbrellas, so very easy to put up.

Picked up a Kampa Caister 5 tent recently - its nominally a 5 person tent, but not that expensive and plenty of room inside plus its the smallest they do that you can stand up in. Its a 3 pole dome (the third pole is the porch) and I reckon with a 5 year old to hold one end of the pole still you'd get it up with just you and them. Nice tent - we got one as an option for short trips when we can't be bothered with our big one. Thing is with a little one and potentially wet weather you'll need some space other than just the bare minimum so I reckon that could be a good option.

Have you got a GoOutdoors or similar kind of store near you? They always have tents erected so you can gauge the kind of size and height that you want and then see what you can find elsewhere?

Yep, I used to be a Scout leader and we've had 6 year old Beavers putting tents up quite happily with a bit of help.

The alternative is, campers are generally friendly people, don't be afraid to ask the folks on the next pitch for a hand, or even the site owners when you check in if it's a small site. My parents run a five-site and really don't mind giving their guests a hand if they need it.
Yes it's overwhelming, but what else can we do?
