Scottish road trip

Hello lovely people,

OH and I are planning a 2 week road trip around Scotland in August - and before you say anything we know about the midgies and are prepared!!

I would love some top tips about places to go, things to do, top camping sites (including wild camping which we hope to do a lot of), hidden gems.....and whether it's worth getting a ferry-hopping pass, to which islands, and in what order!

If it helps, we love photography, landscapes, wildlife spotting, heritage type stuff, doing 'local', eating well....and adventure sports.

Thanks heaps in advance!

The main road into the Pensinsula past Salen is nearly all single track and utterly spaghetti like along with 1st and 2nd gear twists and turns with up and downhill gradients where you'll struggle to see ahead! But it's totally worth it. We stumbled upon the area by accident - we visited Tobermory and decided to take the ferry to Kilchaon back to our lodge near Fort William. We fell in love with the place and returned the next day for a longer explore.

Yes, if you go to Ardnamurchan, be sure to get the ferry across to Tobermory (it's only 20 minutes and there's about 10 a day). It's really beautiful and you could spend a day there and return via the ferry to Oban

I'm keen to go to Staffa - am I right you can go from Tobermory there? I've been to the Giant's Causeway, and it will be nice to join it up at the other end!

If you get far enough north the brochs are worth a look.

The last proper road trip I did around Scotland was some time ago, as you can tell by the car...

Just back from a quick trip to Glasgow at the weekend if you like seafood have a trip to Oban and go to EE USK restaurant for an amazing seafood platter. In Glasgow itself there is an amazing museum called the Riverside.

Two weeks isn't long enough to do all Scotland. We have visited many times over the last 20 years, but last was the first time we had been to Fife.

Concentrate on the area you really want to see, which could include an island or two and max out on it.

West Coast is a favourite. Oban, Fort William (which is a dump, but good camping around Arisaig), Skye ferry, stay on Skye, Skye bridge, trip to Applecross, Gairloch, Lochinver, Ullapool to North Coast.

Good tip there, daveyjp - thanks. Maybe we'll just point the car north and see where it takes us, and after a week turn it back south!

You could go by Stirling, see the castle, head on to Callander and onward to killin, then to Oban .
