Cheapest way to use a mobile in Turkey ?

Options
Off to Turkey shortly and need to keep in limited touch with the UK and my friends Turkey. Have a Vodafone contract and was planning to use their Eurotraveller service but just discovered Turkey isn't covered. Taking a PAYG sim will be very expensive at £1.65 per minute and 48p per text.

Anyone found a lower cost solution for mobile use in Turkey?

TIA

No, but you can buy international phone cards and use the payphones, that's the cheapest way to keep in touch or take a tablet and use free wi-fi in hotels and restaurants to skype

Cannot comment on the rest of Turkey but in the Hisaronou / Fetiye / Olu Deniz area most bars etc offer free WiFi, you just ask them for the password.
Use a smartphone and an app like Skype or Viber and you can call any one with the same app via the Internet free of charge.

My wife is in Turkey at the moment, if I am connected to my internet through wifi and I call using Viber if she is in a wifi area I get the message ringing and then connect, If she is not in a wifi area I get the message not available do I want to make an ordinary call

I assume Skype works in a similar way

I always take my phone, and switch data roaming off.
I use whats app, to send messages,
Skype to make calls to other users who have Skype.
And for my mothers who doesn't I put a fiver on Skype and use it to ring him. As do all of my other friends.

EE offer Roaming tarrifs which include unlimited minutes and texts for all the usual places in the EU but also Turkey and the USA among other places. No other network seems to offer this. They offer discounted data roaming too. Only problem is, the tarrifs are rather expensive and are 24 month contracts - plus it is not available sim only so you'd have to buy a new handset. But if you're a heavy user and/or a frequent traveller to places outside the EU, then the tariffs are well worth looking at.

e.g £36 per month plus £169.99 upfront cost for iPhone 5. Unlimited minutes and texts in UK, EU and the following countries: Armenia Australia China Colombia Ecuador India Israel Macedonia Martinique Mexico Peru Russia Turkey USA

It is the same in most places in Turkey, most bars and restaurants will offer free wifi. They don't always advertise it, but if you ask if they have wifi, they are usually happy to give you the password.
