Solid oak floor

Hi all,
My solid oak floor will be installed tomorrow. My fitter said he will install it straight onto floor boards.
I asked if any underlay goes under it. I have no clue what underlay is. just that i know that the word goes with flooring/carpets. He said he can put in a thin foam (??) sheet if I want.
My question to the wise people of this forum - whats the best way to install solid wood flooring? Is it straight on to the floor boards or will some kind of underlay help keep it warm?

I wouldn't put underlay underneath it. I have none under mine and it isn't cold.0

Are you trying to catch the installer out?
Surely these are questions you should have asked or been quoted for by the installer, not the night me before on a forumHi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure0 -
I'd be inclined to ask for the underlay. It will help smooth out any imperfections on the floor and cushion it when you walk on it thus reducing the possibility of creaking and squeaking, as well as minimising wear.0

I have felt type underlay under my oak floor from wickes. Big green rectangles about £20 a pack of 10 sheets0
