Tesco with Clubcard discount.
Get him a big saloon, Volvo, Rover 75.0 -
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^As above. Don't be fooled by thinking that small cars in low insurance groups will be cheaper to insure. They all get crashed so Corsa's, Polos, and Ka and the like may be a lot more expensive than a proper car.
I would add the Volvo V40 to your list. Solidly built and very cheap to buy.0 -

I read this on here & tried it for my 18yo lad on a few big cars.
The only one I can remember clearly was for a Rover 75 diesel & the cheapest quote was £3800 tpft (others such as Volvos all came in at a similar price)
He's now bought a 1.2 Corsa, £1600 tpft so "big saloon" didn't work for us.Always try to be at least half the person your dog thinks you are!0 -
Older Volvo 340 model.
But the postcode makes a big difference. So what works for one may not work for someone else.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -

Exactly. It's about spending (lots of) time finding what best suits you & using every legal means to get the cost down!
£1600 is still a bloody joke though....Always try to be at least half the person your dog thinks you are!0 -
Try an old 2002 ish Skoda Fabia, these are often in a low group (I believe there are uncool :rotfl:)
I recall an 02 1.4 MPI being a Group 2 insurance, it was a very low spec model but may be worth a try, should be cheap enough to buy too0 -
something group 12 maybe cheaper than a 1-5 group.
TPFT is not always cheaper, it could work out allot dearer, £600 difference for me between full comp and TPFT full comp being a whoping £600 cheaper, and get many unable to quotes for thirdparty only.
vehicle, security, postcode, employemt status and description, his high risk factor for being a inexperinced driver also added risk for being young driver (sub 25yr old), mileage per annum higher more cost lower better, family status all added factors.0 -
Try Liverpool Vic for insurance. If you are in a union like Unison go via their site and you will get extra discount.
Cheapest by far I could find for DD.

DS1 passed his test in feb 2012. He is 18 now (19 in August). Bought him a 06 Peugeot 307 1.6 petrol recently. Best quote with me and OH as named drivers was £750 fully comp. I thought that was pretty reasonable. You can pick your friends and you can pick your nose but you can't pick your friend's nose.0

No no no no no....forgotmyname wrote: »Older Volvo 340 model.

For one they're terrible cars (Had one for 2 years)
For another, they've become immensely popular over the last five year with the drift kiddies, as they're a cheap RWD car. They're therefore finding themselves wrapped around trees and lamp-posts the length and breadth of the land, and insurance premiums are reflecting this.
I'd want something safe-ish, decent sized and he's 22 so not the liability of a 17-18 year old. I had an Audi 80 Tdi when I was 22.
Look for mid sized saloons, perhaps a Focus or other hatchback. Seat Leons are good value for money and come with reliable frugal diesels, as do Skoda Fabias.
Just a thought... at 22 I bought my own car... and insured it myself....
You give no idea of budget or requirements though so it's hard to be specific.0
