A couple of weeks ago I was offered free cavity wall insulation by Evergreen. We had a surveyor come round, drill a hole and do a energy survey to check our house was eligible which he said it was. The salesman phoned a week later with an installation date and said it would be between 8am and 12pm - I took a full day off as it can take 2 hours to do. I waited in and finally got a call at 12:30 and they arrived at 1pm - that was the first annoyance. Even more annoying, they drilled a load more holes and declared that the cavity was too big and my house too modern - the free insulation is for houses with smaller cavities, normally older properties and they would get into trouble if they did the installation on my house. The men seemed pretty annoyed themselves - they get paid by the job and many of the houses they'd been to that morning weren't eligible at all.

I'm still waiting for a call back from Evergreen but it looks like I've lost a day's pay for nothing  avoid if they approach you offering this!!

If it was built in 1996 surwly it would have had cavity wall insulation installed when it was being built?

And why did you not take a days leave rather than lose a days pay for this?

Isn't this the point of the OP having the surveyor round first, to tell them if it's needed and suitable?

Stupid post of the day. Do you know the full details of the OPs personal circumstances, including their job, or are you just asking dumb questions for the sake of it?

....and the surveyor somehow managed to reach the incorrect conclusion that the property was in need of cavity wall insulation.

Evidently. Or you could be wrong, and the property not already have it, since neither the surveyor nor the installer said it did.

No, no cavity wall insulation installed already, I knew that already without the surveyor checking.

Annual leave? Not when you're self employed I'm afraid! If I could take annual leave then I would've lost a day's annual leave so pretty irrelevant really, lose lose.

They haven't called me back which is no surprise, I'll get onto head office tomorrow. There's not much they can do for me but they need to have a word with their surveyors.

Update - I complained to Everwarm HO and they apologised and said that the surveyor would be asked to phone me and explain himself. He phoned that day and said my house should've been fine and he didn't understand the problem. I later had a call back from HO to say they we're sending a supervisor out to measure again. He took several measurements and it turns out the cavity is different sizes in different parts of the wall. He took the average measurement and authorised the installation after all! They arrived a few days later (3 hours late but never mind) and installed my cavity wall insulation :) A happy customer at last!
