An experienced walking guide is running a four day walking festival in Competa, one of the white villages of Andalucia - only an hour from Malaga airport and 35mins from Nerja. You have to get yourself there and find somewhere to stay but you can sign up for four days of walking for only E10 per person. You can choose to walk the routes yourself using maps provided or join a guided walking party. Each day there are two walks - an easy one and a more advanced walk.
This is a great deal for anyone interested in walking or who wants to explore this area of Spain. There is a great mix of little Spanish villages and larger tourist resorts on the coast all within an easy drive.
Find out more, http://www.walkspain.co.uk/walking-festival-2013/
Clearly at E10 per person this event is not being run to make anyone lots of money - the guide and the local town hall are just promoting awareness of the countryside. I know the area well and it makes a great base for a safe family holiday. There are loads of budget airline flights to Malaga and accommodation of all standards and for all budgets in Competa and the surrounding area.
Give the standard package holiday deals and miss and try something a lot more exciting and active.

This looks good- thanks; I'll check it out
Walking seems really popular among the Expat residents there in the Sierra de Tejeda. As well as this group, I know of at least one more, who walk every saturday, 30-50 strong - meeting a bit further west of Competa; I've been out with them a couple of times while visiting from the UK
(I think they meet most saturdays at 10am on the bridge at Puente Don Manuel just off the A402 road up from Velez Malaga the coast, but you could contact the local expat grocers' shop in Puente to check; http://www.arkwrights-groceries.com/ )
Lots of walks in the sierra de Tejeda, and a bit less hard work than the Alpujarras further East, south of Granada:

But to my mind, the mountains of the north - especially the Picos de Europa are better for walking; scenic and cooler too, with snow on the tops well into May- look at http://www.topwalks.net/en/ (which covers the whole of Spain), http://ratoncantabria.wordpress.com (for inspirational photos)
or the walks page of the webpage of my favourite hotel

And the good thing about the Picos, is you can take the car on Brittany ferries- only a couple of hours from Santander or a bit more from Bilbao0
