Due to my stupidity when i was younger, ive had a crap credit report for years, so bad infact that i cannot get a basic account in most cases, or even bad credit loans, or anything. I have around 8 accounts on my report which defaulted and were paid off in full a couple of years ago, however again, since then i've had no luck with ANY form of credit despite earning £35,000 + bonuses.
I checked my credit report the other day and sure enough, it was 14/1000 - 1 active CCJ, and all those defaulted accounts still showing for another 2 years or so. However, i really need a proper bank account so i decided to apply with Natwest.
Current account, approved - even offered an overdraft (Which i refused!) but still, i applied with natwest 2 months ago and couldnt even get their basic account!
My current phone contract is in my wifes name and about to expire, so i decided to try myself for my own contract (i tried last year with every network and was declined!).
Just tried with Orange for the iPhone 5 on £31 a month, Approved.
Very bizarre, these two things alone im sure will help me get some credit worthiness back, but bearing in mind i couldnt get anything, and i literally mean anything just a few months ago and nothing has changed on my credit file, im genuinely shocked.

Different providers use different credit scoring methods, don't take any notice of the 14/1000 score from the CRA's.
I've got 5 defaults (2008 - 2009) and 1 CCJ from 2009, in the past year I've managed to get 2 contract accounts, 1 CC, 2 short loans, NatWest Current Account, Overdraft with Nationwide and a mail ordering account, when before I couldn't even get a normal bank account. It is certainly strange indeed. I started off with a SIM only 30 day plan which gave me the chance to build my file up again ready for the 2 year contract with Orange.
If one credit provider is willing to lend, others will surely follow, in time
Also, did you just register for the ER at all?0 -
Yeah, the phone contract will help you rebuild for sure. As said above, different lenders see things differently which is why you are ok with some but not others. That credit score might as well be a made up number.
Once you've had 6-9 months of data reported for the phone try applying for the Vanquis card to add more positive data to your report.0
