Credit Card Over Limit Query

Hello,

Yesterday I inadvertantly went slightly over my credit limit. I had lost my debit card for a few days last month, which happened to be a busy one for purchases, so I ended up spending more on my credit card than I would tend to, although remaining under limit. I pay my credit debts of in full each month but last month's purchases don't get paid until 8th July.

Yesterday I bought something on credit card which on noticing today will have put me ~£14 over the limit. I noticed this today on checking the account, that although the over limit fee and purchase have yet to be listed, my available credit is Nil and I suspect they will be added shortly. I quickly transfered over the money for the purchase I made yesterday.

So my questions are
1) Will I have any way of claiming back the £12 over limit fee in this case?
2) Will this have any effect on my credit rating??

Thanks

    1) only if they are feeling kind and as a gesture of goodwill. Possible if it's your first offence.

    2) depends on whether they report it to the CRAs. They may not if it has been rectified before your statement date.

They'll only report it to the CRA if at the time they send info you are still £14 over the limit.

Is it worth phoning them up and asking about these two queries?

To be honest I'm thinking of potentially cancelling the credit card as it is not something I particularly need at present. Does it look better to have a credit card, with rather low limit, used only occasionally or is it better to just settle it all together?

Always better to have at least one card that you use regularly and pay off in full in each month.

No cards makes you look like an untrustworthy wastrel.

first thing is: get the card back under it's limit. then call the card provider to discuss.

How is it something you do not need if you are at your Credit Limit?

If you are that close, be carefull that monthly interest doesnt put you above that limit?

By the fact that you recently lost your debit card, it does show that you need some additional facility as a backup!

  • a similar thing happened to me. I spoke to my credit card provider (Lloyds) and they said it wouldn't affect my credit rating as long as I didn't remain over the limit until. I just cleared the total amount...

I hear all the time someone fed up with being ripped off by the banks/CC companies and cutting up all their cards.

I know its better to just be responsible and pay them off, but you should not need to have CC's to not look like a untrustworthy wastrel.
