Using Sky and a PVR

It seems that once someone cancels their sky subscription their sky+ box becomes as useful as just the ordinary sky box.
Does anyone know whether I can buy a PVR from Maplin or somewhere and use that instead of a sky+ box? I plan to subscribe to sky for the minimum 12 months only, and want to be able to have the facilities of a hard-disk recorder after my 12 months is up.
Anyone got any advice?

most PVR's only record from internal tuners and don't record external sources, a hard disk DVD recorder would work though0
