Today I have sorted car insurance for £115 cheaper than my renewal quote :j Was a little sad that they charge to pay with credit cards as I was hoping for a little juicy bonus on the Nectar points card but the cash value wouldn't outweigh the charges so it had to be put on the debit card meaning my savings will take a little hit
Need to be extra careful for the rest of the month and make sure they get back up again.

Hi Lois,
I am indeed a Science teacher, loving how much 'outdoor learning' can go on at this time of year :rotfl:
Savings have taken a little hit due to the car insuranceGot an extra job for a couple of weeks so that should bump it back up again but got an expensive couple of months coming up. This savings lark is not easy when every spare penny's going on the house.

And to make the savings lark more difficult I've got a busy social diary looming. Down to my last £20 in cash which I want to make last until payday next Friday. Might have to cheat a little and put some things on my CC but should all be do-able. Need to get back on the spending diary and work out where it all goes as I'm sure I was looking like having £100 left over just this time last week.
Oh, and an update on the expensive hen do for anyone interested; £230 for accommodation, £65 for spa session and £35 for dinner one night, plus transport and own spends  Have asked to just pop along to one night, hoping for change for £120 all in, which is still loads but seems a compromise I'm happy withMortgage Outstanding Nov '16 £142,772.75Mortgage Additional OPs 2017 Target £4522.80/ Actual £865.00GC Feb 0/£2000 -
I will be following this thread with interest as my DH and I are in the process of buying our first house and have applied for a 35 year mortgage to have lower repayments but our plan is to overpay when possible else we will have the mortgage till we retire
I'll largely be leaving the finances to my DH as he is much better with money than I am but I'm looking for support in living the MSE lifetsyle! We will also have to rebuild our savings after the sale goes through because we won't have much left at all. Then we can start thinking about overpaying.
Good luck in your journey!0 -
Hi Deus,
we had the same plan but the mortgage company said DH is too old for a term that long :rotfl: or at least it was funny til I found out it would cost is an extra £130 a month  but, we can afford it so I guess its an enforced OP each month anyway and we hope to get a better rate when the fixed term is up as we will have improved our LTV by doing work on it. Now just praying interest rates stay stable until then!Mortgage Outstanding Nov '16 £142,772.75Mortgage Additional OPs 2017 Target £4522.80/ Actual £865.00GC Feb 0/£2000 -
Right then, been away a while earning some extra pennies but have let my money saving slip a bit during that time. I found out this month that payday is not the last Friday, but the last working day- it just so happens those have been Fridays the last few months, so I had a massive panic when I wasn't paid on time and also ended up in the overdraft as I needed to buy food! In order to do better this month I have re-started my spending diary, feeling glad that I didn't blow £20 on a new dog bed and £45 on a lovely picture frame for an anniversary present as that would have left me with only £150 for the rest of the month. Am going to have to come up with a cheaper way of making his present but I'm sure I will think of something.
On the house side of things, DH and his wonderful friend have done heaps of work whilst I've been away and we now have one room stripped and re-plastered so we could paint it and have somewhere reasonable to live if we needed to move in quickly. They have also ripped out the bathroom and knocked it through into the toilet next door, plastered over some of the Artex and cut down the hideous conifers in the garden. The planning lady from the council came round this week for a visit but didn't give anything away with regards to the time frame for approval or otherwise- just have to keep fingers crossed I guess!Mortgage Outstanding Nov '16 £142,772.75Mortgage Additional OPs 2017 Target £4522.80/ Actual £865.00GC Feb 0/£2000 -
Planning lady has requested some alterations to the plans and should approve them once that's done. We need to set the extension over the garage back another 1.2m, which mean that will have to be 1 room not 2 now but will still work. Need to get a structural engineer and building regs stuff done and then it should be good to go :j:
Time to get on the phone to the bank of Dad and get the loan off him on its way I think.Mortgage Outstanding Nov '16 £142,772.75Mortgage Additional OPs 2017 Target £4522.80/ Actual £865.00GC Feb 0/£2000 -
Hello,
Exciting times with the new house, it is great when you can tear things apart and not have to sleep there! Good luck with it all,
Squirrel:jPaid off mortgage nine years early in 2013. Now picking and choosing our work to fit in with the rest of our lives!
Still thrifty though, after all these years:D0 -
Yesterday we bought our 1st new house furniture, a sideboard and a sink. Both second hand and both beautiful and exactly what we were looking for. I am especially excited about my kitchen sink, its a double bowl, double drainer and only cost £36 plus a bit in petrol to collect. A quick look online suggests that brand new we would be looking at over £200 so I'm very pleased with myself. Raided the charity shop for the sideboard too and have lots of bits on my watch list on eBay. Might need a little word with myself though as I probably shouldn't be filling an unfinished house with furniture! :rotfl:Mortgage Outstanding Nov '16 £142,772.75Mortgage Additional OPs 2017 Target £4522.80/ Actual £865.00GC Feb 0/£2000
