Towed away in Edinburgh...

Hi everyone. Today was parked in Montrose Terrace (Edinburgh) on a single yellow line. I'd checked the sign at the top of the street which said parking was ok between 9.15am and 4pm, but there ere no spaces so parked maybe 50m further down. At 11am came out to find my car on the back of a towaway truck. I asked the warden why it was being towed and his response was 'we had a truck in the vicinity' (the customer i was doing some work for had come out by this time so he heard my question and the wardens response). Can the council tow away any vehicle thats illegally parked in their view, or does there have to be some sort of extra criteria that makes towing possible, as opposed to issuing a ticket only? It turns out that parking is only allowed at the top half of the street and not the bottom. Its going to cost £180 to release the car (as they need I.D didn't have time to get it today) Is there any chance of an appeal? it just seems really REALLY unfair thats all. Cheers folks

You must pay and get your car back as a priority (you may have to pay a day's storage now too, as well as the PCN and tow fee). Do not prompt them at the pound about appeals, do not ask nor comment, just grunt at them! Basically they should give you appeal forms but do not ask; if they fail then that makes your case stronger!
It's an absolute no-brainer to appeal a tow all the way to adjudication.
Here's a recent Scotland towing thread just started on pepipoo forum:

See the advice given there already. There's standard wording to include in any appeal (and not just Bogsy's wording as shown, there's more). Start your own thread with pics of all the paperwork you get at the pound (front & back of PCN and all documents but cover up personal info and PCN number). Register and post with pics here:

You have nothing to lose and the full refund to gain!PRIVATE 'PCN'? DON'T PAY BUT DON'T IGNORE IT (except N.Ireland).

Yes there is a good chance to win an appeal, and lets face it once you've paid you might as well appeal all the way. I think you would have got a PCN with the tow, if they force you to pay it without any chance of appealing it, I think that would be something you can add to the appeal .
But the best chance is going to https://www.pepipoo.com for this as they are the experts on council PCNsWhen posting a parking issue on MSE do not reveal any information that may enable PPCs to identify you. They DO monitor the forum.
We don't need the following to help you.
Name, Address, PCN Number, Exact Date Of Incident, Date On Invoice, Reg Number, Vehicle Picture, The Time You Entered & Left Car Park, Or The Amount of Time You Overstayed.
