Were you on a fixed-rate or special tariff that has ended? Your bill will tell you about changes in unit prices - look and see.

Is this based on an estimated bill? If so, send e-on your meter readings.

What makes you say there has been no change in the amount you use? Do you mean that the number of units on the bill hasn't changed, or that you have not changed the way that you use electricity? Could be a big difference between the two.

We have had an unusually long, cold winter so if you use electricity for heating, this will result in higher electricity bills.

Finally, do a comparison and change supplier.

weve had the heating /lights etc the same as always, no new elec items ..not differant enough to justify that increase

not sure how i know if its esitmated or what , they sometimes read the meter ? theyve just sent a letter saying £84 month for the next 12 month and it seems like a huge increase

Look on your bill for the meter reading (the numbers) and see if it has the letter E next to it (for estimated reading). If so, then you need to look at your meter, write down the actual numbers and contact Eon via the website or phone number that is on the bill.

Also look and see what 'plan' you are on. On the page of the bill with all the meter readings, under the words "The details" and "Electricity Charges", look and see whether it says "E.ON EnergyPlan" which is their default (i.e. most expensive) tarif, or something else.

My last E.ON bill had two sections for electricity because my special rate deal ended part way through, so I had "E.ON SaveOnline 11" and also "E.ON EnergyPlan". However, I knew in advance that the SaveOnline 11 was ending so had arranged to move to a cheaper supplier, so this was my last bill.

You need to look at the bill properly and get familiar with what it all means - yes, they are confusing, but you need to try and at least work out what tarif you are on and whether your bills are estimated otherwise it will be very difficult to work out how much you might save by switching.

Have you compared the estimated reading to the actual?

    Edit: This might help

    Morning steveo3002,

The first thing to do is to read your meter and get the actual read, if you have an online account you can pop the reading in there and produce a bill.

If not you can give us a call and we will re-bill the account for you. Once the account is charges accurately I would suggest asking for the Direct Debit to be re-calculated based on this.

It may need to be increased if you have a balance and also because of the January price increase.

It may also be worth when you're on the phone asking if there might be a better tariff for you to be on. You can also have a look at the website about this.

If you need any help from me, just ask.

    Helena :)

Unless you can compare the actual useage in Kw on a month by month basis against what you used last year then you don't really know whether you've used more or less electricty this year over last year. Like wise if you dont keep track of your useage you don't know if you've accumulated a large arrears which the electricity company are trying to recover.

It's not hard to read the meter once a month and send it to your provider so both of you know what you are using and the provider can then give you more accurate bills.

If you know what you are using then you can make sure that your payments should average out over the year without either overpaying or underpaying - it's up to you to take charge otherwise the electric company will take what they want.

Try setting up a spreadsheet and entering the meter reading once a month and you'll be able to track your useage and identify any anomolies. You'll also have a record of what you've used which will help when you use comparison sites to try and getter a better deal
Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers

So your previous meter was an 'actual' reading by the company and the present one is an estimate.

E.ON energy plan is the standard tarif and you will be able to finder a cheaper plan either with E.ON or with another company.

Follow all the advice that you have been given here - but don't sign up for a new plan eith E.ON without comparing the costs with other companies first - unless the E.ON plan has no exit penalty.

If you have an online direct debit account you can adjust your payments up or down by 20%. I did this becuase my monthly payments went up by £80. I managed to halve that by dialling my payments down.

Eon check your payments twice a year and adjust them if they think you have been underpaying. It will be checked again in december.

My plan is to read the meter each month and manually adjust my payments using their online system so that I know I am paying what I should be.
