Gym Membership?

Hi I recently joined DW gym, after being messed around by them, I rang up and asked for my membership to be cancelled - I am in a 6 month contract.
I was told no, however I've only been a member for a week at the point that I asked.
Do gyms have to have a cooling off period for new members?

You'll likely find that was an automated email when they cancelled your account for non-payment and you may be contacted at some point in the future by debt collectors.
I say may because not all gyms are terrible. My local is really good and doesnt tie anyone in to 12 month contracts, its just a monthly rolling contract. If there is a genuine reason to cancelling (health for example), they'll usually let you cancel without even giving the 30 days. You keep using that word.
