Cancelling A Card

I'm trying to improve my credit rating by following some of the tips on this site.
I started by trying to cancel my Egg credit card account.
They said that they could not do this as there is still a balance on the card.
Has anyone come across this before?
I guess this means that you can only cancel a card with no outstanding balance?

Yes, you do have to pay them back the money you owe them before terminating the agreement.
I'm suprised that anyone would expect different.
If you don't want to continue spending then that's easy, simply cut up the card.0 -

Just a suggestion but what you could do, if you still have an outstanding balance, nowhere to transfer that balance to, but think your problems with your credit rating are to do with the fact that you have too much available credit, is to ask egg to reduce your credit limit. If you don't plan to use that card again you could ask for your limit to be reduced to a few hundred pounds or so above your balance. But remember it means you'll have a lot less leeway so you need to be sure that interest added to the balance and any pending transactions won't accidentally push you above your new limit.
It all depends why your credit rating isn't good. If you really want rid of your egg card could you look at transferring the balance to another card?OS weight loss challenge: 4.5/6 lbs0
