Feel like giving up - a moan
So this year I've grown runner beans, french beans, various tomatoes and peas from seed. So far:
The local moggy has dug most of my efforts up (despite lots of short sticks in the soil)
The birds have feasted on my peas (despite pea netting)
The slugs & snails have also had a good feast (despite slug pellets)
and now we have unseasonal winds that are twisting and snapping off everything in sight
I love growing plants and have done so for a few years now but I'm beginning to think it would be far easier and cheaper to buy it all from the supermarket

I know it's a total poop:(:(
We all get years like you are having, and mother nature hasnt made it easy for gardener's for the last few years..
I have only just sown my runner beans in pots:cool: BUT hopefully I should get some sort of crop from them..
I would suggest you put the kettle on, make a nice cuppa, have a nice biscwit...:D ( this allways puts me in a better mood)
and then see if anything can be saved with a bit of tlc etc...or if it is possible to do a second sowing..Work to live= not live to work0 -
But sometimes there is a ray of hope , This afternoon spotted my first outdoor red ( pinkish ) strawberry0

If you are feeling a bit down with all the effort you are putting in (I know I was frustrated this morning when I looked in the garden and saw my delphiniums flattened by all the wind and rain we had last night here up North) what about growing something like salad leaves or rocket, it's easy to grow, I have had several pickings and it does not take long to produce.0

First off, it is easier buying from the local supermarket. Possibly cheaper to. Dont know about that one though.
If some thing you stick in, doesnt grow or gets pulled up, then stick some thing else in and try that instead.
beetroot or salads as suggested or something long term which is a little easier like a fruit tree, what do you like Apples? plums? etc.... on dwarf stock if you have a small garden
I do occassionally have the odd day when I think oh why, but generally I enjoy the gardening more than eating the stuff.
So it is easier going to the supermarket but not as satisfying, IMO.
I pulled my first garlic yesterday and mighty satisfying it was, and they taste great.0 -
My Chinese cabbage is still small and it is going to seed, as is my rocket and I haven't even eaten any of it! My lovely lupin has serious wind damage, my Southernwood has a large branch hanging off. But tomatoes and courgettes are doing well. Mint is always a good one to grow. If that fails, well, it must be the apocalyse so your garden would be the least of your problems.Warning: This forum may contain nuts.0

The only thing I've found that will definitely keep cats out is a good wire mesh cage around the whole bed or container. It will keep the birds out too.
Bird netting will deter cats, but only if it's tight enough. If it's floppy, the cats will squash it, then start digging through the net.If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.0 -
Thanks all, just having a bad day I guess.
Three tomato plants have been destroyed by the wind (snapped off at the roots) and the french beans look unlikely to survive as their leaves have completely died back.
Onwards and upwards I guess - will keep reseeding until the first frost comes

Slugs ate all my sowings of runner beans,I got a few around the poles then a few days later they came back for those. My carrots look a bit sparse ...I'm wondering why I'm bothering with carrots they are 39p a half kilo bag in Aldi! Peas are a bit windswept but holding on not sure if I'll have enough for a serving all ready at once by the time they have been podded! I think I'm just going to concentrate on herbs that I can rush out into the garden & cut fresh. They are quite expensive to keep buying in those pots as growing herbs,I never use them all up, so I've planted some out & they have taken.0

I too have a single strawberry:o....my courgettes have been eaten 4 times now by slugs:(
everything seems to not want to survive this year ..apart from flower beds which seem to be enjoying themselves. oh well i plan to put in raised beds next for year so hopefully next year will be better.***MSE...My.Special.Escape***0 -
