Cash withrawal abroad, hows best ?

Whats the best way to withdraw money from a UK account whilst in one of the Eurpean Countries ?

Someone said she drew 200 each day at a cash point and thinks it 2.5% commision. The Bank told her to go inside and draw more at cheaper commision ?

I want to draw money from my Barclays account, about 1000 - 2000 as I did not carry enough T/Cs Travelling round at present, so know there may be different costs per Country.

France, Spain etc firstly though.

Thanks

  • If you want more travellers cheques then you could go to the local American Express Travel office - they have them in most places. Alternatively, you're probably better going into a bank and making a couple of larger withdrawals rather than using an ATM multiple times.

    Halifax Clarity CC, MetroBank cards

    Most cards charge 2.75-3% commission.
Most credit cards charge 2.5-3% extra for ATMs. Very few don't charge. Don't know about over a counter withdrawals.[STRIKE] Very few don't charge. [/STRIKE]
Most debit cards charge up 2% for ATMs, some don't charge.

Paying by a card will be cheaper. Why do you need loads of cash? It's Europe after all, not Africa.
  • I get the impression that the OP may already be away on an extended trip so probably not able to apply for new products. If all you have to work with is a debit card then my advice above still stands.

Incidentally, what debit card (what bank) do you have with you?

Since you're with Barclays, if you have a Barclaycard that's not too bad for foreign ATM withdrawals. They charge 3% (or whatever) but no other fees/loading. Plus they treat it as a purchase so no interest if you pay off in full when you get the statement.

I think you are wrong on this count:

    Yes - it is 2.99% - the "3%" I mentioned below:

So only 2.99% and up to 56 days to pay..

No, what I quoted and corrected was that they didn't treat it as purchases and that there would be interest to pay.

    See http://www.barclaycard.co.uk/personal/new-transaction-fee

This means the cost of withdrawing cash overseas will be less than at present. In addition, you will also be able to get up to 56 days interest free on all types of non-sterling cash transactions, including cash withdrawals overseas, if you pay off your statement balance in full by the payment date shown.

    (I have done this.)

In fact for some reason I thought that they didn't treat it like purchases.
    And I was wrong :o.
  • How much will you be charged on top if you draw £200 From a ATM abroad with a lloyds credit card, is it 2.5 to 3%... is that it or do you also get charged for using the ATM..
