  • I find it hard to think its a good idea to live in a caravan permanently

1 - you have all the bills you have with a house plus site fees
2 - stastic caravans do not have thick walls roof or floor so it is harder to heat
with gas bottle £63 each and you could use 1 within a week
heating via bottle gas is going to be very expensive. and with structure of caravan not going to be as warm

3 - internal size of caravan
4 - Cost some caravans now are so dear that you can buy a house in some places for a price of it and the caravan drops in value while a house will keep its value or will increase.

If you really want to save on rent stay in a campervan/motorhome on public land/car parks/sides of the road for free. Google "stealth campervan" for some ideas to blend in without getting moved on by the council every few days. Get solar panels on top of your van so you have free electricity and use public toilets and showers at the local leisure centre. For heat and cooking use gas bottles and use them sparingly. Get used to being cold in winter and use extra thick blankets. 4G or 3G mobile tethering for internet.

Stay near work to minimize travel costs and find work anywhere in the country that pays the most so you can save as much as possible.

I reckon £2,000 is a good start and as you save more you can improve the van and eventually it'll be quite luxurious.

:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p
  • Static Caravans are amoney pit. You appear to have very few rights and the park owners can rob you blind. I bought a unit for £18.495, which was documented as being a 2001 model. After 12 months on the site, which was going down hill, I asked for a buy back, I was told they did not want it, I could not sell it on site I could not sub let and it would cost £1800 for disconnection/disposal. And worst of all, it turns out it is a 1999 model not 2001. Stay clear of statics, you only ever loose out. :(
