I recall it was their decision to use some of the existing wiring instead of new wiring in certain areas.

I would have thought they would have tested everything themselves before and after to avoid this exact issue.

Am I being naiive?

Ah, new info.

I think I would be looking for the break in the ring - if it is in stuff they have touched, then down to them. If it is elsewhere, then down to you. Thinking of corners which might be cut, I would not be surprised if there is a whole leg left out of the ring.
