The voice....what a scam

On the strength of this thread I just watched the first round of the show on iPlayer (not a huge fan of this talent show format so came to this fresh). The contestants looked like 4 lovely genuine young singers giving it their all. There were rough edges and poor choices, but it is an amateur singing show with professional staging, and without hesitation they all did far better than I would.
However there were some dropped notes and unnecessary attempts to do vocal tricks. There just were, watch it back in the cold light ofday if you're not convinced. Based on their opening performance, the guy who started on the ramp showed most promise to me - admittedly the show is all about singing, but unless you're listening to an MP3, you want some performance to go with it. He delivered very capably. He's the horse I'd back for a long career.
Proving what? That we all like different things. Hardly news, is it?0 -
Paying money to vote for any TV show isn't very MSE in my opinion. By next week all is forgotten and your money is wasted. The "charity" in question isn't one I would want to support in any case.
I don't think it was rigged - I thought Leah would win but there was probably a sympathy element for Andrea who seems like a really nice person as well as her impairment.
What you should have a poll on is how many goldfish you can win by throwing JJ's head into a fairground.0 -
Just because the bookies favourite didn't win doesn't make it a fix it depends who the majority of voters were, if they were middle aged people then Andrea would probably get more votes than Leah. Andrea does have a very special voice after all said and done, Leah on the other hand has a very interesting voice and will appeal to a more modern market the sort of music fans who probably wouldn't watch the Voice let alone feel the need to vote. No matter who won all the finalists should appeal to one section of the market and could make careers out of this chance to show their talent. As for Will what a showman I really enjoyed his and Leah's duet, although I enjoyed Jessie and Matt more and thought that Danny and Andrea did the business too.0

who cares.
If they are marketable they will get recording contracts. Then if people like the songs they can buy them.0 -
Okay, Leah will actually do better because she did not win.
Will no doubt has her signed already to his label and to be her manager.
He will have her over in the US working with the best in the business(Will knows everyone), he believes in her. He is tweeting about Leah and him getting into the studio next week. Recording her own original stuff, not just covers.
Leah won, crap record deal waiting months and months for anything to be released.
Andrea, has the soft sweet Eva Cassidy voice that loads in the UK love. Many said from day one she would win. The UK public voted and she won. No one died. Her aunt was a very well known Irish country singer who had a long career.0 -
I expected this result and I wanted Andrea to win.

It's interesting how people have such different views.
I was significantly underwhelmed by all of Andrea's performances from the semi onwards - especially My Immortal, where they cut out all the hard bits, and Hall Of Fame, which was fairly cringey.
Leah's performances I thought were..."undeniable" is the word I'd use. I agree with a lot of others on here that she's yet to fully learn the whole "just because you can, doesn't mean you should" thing...too much riffing, needs to tone it down.
(that said
a) a lot of successful artists have yet to learn the same thing - Jessie J, ironically, is one of the worst...when you watch her perform live she riffs about (and does her stupid scatman stuff) so often that you can't just relax into the melody of the song. Madonna, too, has yet to learn that just because you *can* do funky yoga poses and roll around in a leotard, doesn't mean you *should*
b) She's kind of over a barrel, I suppose...she has to try and sell herself, show her range in a short space of time...but she'd have been better off cutting some of the super-low and super-high stuff for the sake of making the performances more...pleasant, I guess.
)
Leah did, however, demonstrate the greatest control over her voice and, also, the greatest potential to actually make it as a "pop star" through performance. Her two weakest vocal performances (Rapture and Bang Bang) were probably my favourites.
Honestly, I was completely shocked by the result, I thought Leah was walking it home....but in retrospect, without being...err...elitist? I simply wonder if the people who "get" Leah are the same people that pick up the phone to vote...I also think the "story" for Andrea and Will being generally annoying (and awesome) swung things. Would be genuinely interested to see the numbers though, I wonder if it was even close in the end.
..and I know you shouldn't read things on the DM...but this article, whilst fairly harsh, raised a smile from me:

(oh...and Matt was 1,000,000,000,000% better than Mike, too! !!!!!!!)0
